Crosses made of barro brunido
The ancient craft of Barro Brunido (Burnished) ceramic has been perfected by an improved technique created here in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and more specifically, the pueblos of Tonala and Tlaquepaque. Starting with a very fine clay mined nearby, the pieces are fired at 500F , 600F then taken out and cooled. Next a stain bath or 'slip' is applied for the purpose of covering the pores and serving as a base or background for the painting. Next comes the burnishing, creating the shine that is obtained by rubbing the surface of the piece with a mineral stone called 'pyrite', thereby closing the pores and creating a final smooth surface. Now the most important part, that of creating the distinctive painted designs. This is done by very accomplished, highly trained artists using natural paint pigments applied by fine brushes from horse or dog hair. This is a very time consuming, intensive process but the final result is some of the best, world class distinctive pottery
